Website visitor identification is becoming a much bigger category in automotive.

Platforms such as Fullpath, Catalyst IQ, VisitIQ and others are giving dealers new ways to connect anonymous website behavior with shopper identities, existing CRM/DMS records, household data, intent signals and audiences that can be activated through email, advertising or sales follow-up.

The pitch is compelling: thousands of shoppers visit a dealership website every month without submitting a lead. If technology can identify even some of those shoppers, the dealer potentially has an entirely new source of opportunities.

But is it actually producing incremental sales?

There is also an important distinction between identifying a completely unknown shopper and recognizing someone already in the dealership's database who returned to the website.

Dealers using these products: what are you actually seeing?

Not vendor-reported attribution. Actual appointments, showroom visits, sales and gross that you believe would not have happened otherwise.

Looking for real-world feedback from dealers using website visitor identification, identity-resolution, CDP or anonymous-shopper technology.

There are a growing number of vendors claiming they can identify anonymous website visitors, match shoppers back to CRM/DMS records, enrich those identities with additional data, build audiences and in some cases push those shoppers back into the CRM for follow-up.

The concept makes sense.

Most dealership website visitors never submit a lead, so if a dealer can accurately identify a portion of that traffic and convert it into measurable appointments or sales, there could be real value.

But we would like to hear from people actually using these products—not just vendor case studies.

Has the technology created measurable incremental sales? Are the matches accurate? Does it create useful opportunities or simply more CRM noise? Have customers ever questioned how the dealership knew they were shopping?

The fraud discussion adds another question for these platforms: how confident are dealers that an “identified” visitor is actually the correct person? Identity resolution is being used for marketing at the same time dealerships are dealing with synthetic identities, stolen credentials and increasingly sophisticated digital fraud. A 70% or 80% match rate may sound impressive for advertising, but that standard probably is not sufficient if the identity eventually becomes a CRM record or triggers direct outreach. What verification occurs between an identity match and treating that individual as an actual customer?

How does this actually compare to traditional retargeting? I'd rather hit them with a relevant ad on social media than try to pull their identity into my CRM. Retargeting feels like marketing, but this feels like an invasive bypass of the standard sales funnel.

Are you getting match rates as high as 80%? I’m only seeing 40% if we are lucky. My other question is doesn’t the Google platforms and Meta platforms kind of target these audiences for us anyways?
I have not seen a real performance increase using these although I have seen an increase in my cost per click. Agency says it’s because we are targeting more quality searchers. Not sure I buy it all.

High-tech tracking is useless without a surgical BDC strategy. Staff often struggle with these soft signals because they lack specific talk tracks to engage passive browsers. Stores must master the transition from tracking to talking. This investment only pays off if your team converts interest into physical store arrivals.
