Dealership - Administrative
October 15, 2026 - 01:55

Full-size truck inventory increased by approximately 29,000 vehicles during the third quarter, according to new Catalyst IQ research.

The segment represented 12.5% of advertised new-vehicle inventory but only 10.6% of sales, suggesting supply is running ahead of retail demand.

The story isn't identical across manufacturers. Ram 1500 inventory declined, while inventory increased for several competing full-size pickups.

At the same time, smaller sedans and midsize SUVs are demonstrating stronger inventory efficiency.

That raises a difficult question for manufacturers and dealers.

Trucks remain among the industry's most important profit generators, but expensive vehicles can become costly to carry when demand slows and consumers become more sensitive to fuel and payment.

Should OEMs reduce truck production and shift resources toward faster-moving segments?

Or would pulling back now create another supply problem when truck demand recovers?

For dealers, when should an inventory imbalance trigger allocation changes rather than another round of discounting?
