Robotaxis are moving from experiments toward actual commercial transportation businesses.
That creates a dealership question that receives far less attention than whether autonomous vehicles will reduce personal vehicle ownership: who is going to maintain these fleets?
Autonomous vehicles may accumulate mileage far faster than a typical retail customer. Tires, suspension components, HVAC systems, cleaning, collision repairs, sensors, calibrations and routine maintenance could become significant recurring businesses.
But fleet operators may decide to build their own service infrastructure rather than rely on dealerships.
If robotaxis become meaningful transportation providers, dealers could lose some individual vehicle sales while gaining an entirely new high-utilization fixed-operations customer—or get cut out of both sides.
Should large dealership groups begin positioning themselves as outsourced service networks for autonomous fleets now, or is this still too early to deserve serious investment?
